How to prepare plants for your absence?

Everyone, even the most happy florist in life, sometimes has unexpected trips. And regardless of whether a pleasant or not too good reason causes them, such absences violate the usual way of life and all plants in our house. And this is not to mention the long-awaited vacation! Even before you go on vacation or a business trip, it is worth considering how to minimize the traumatic factors for your plants. As with any other crop protection issue, prevention is the best method of struggle. Even if you have a short trip for a few days or you agree with someone about watering for plants, then still take preparatory measures:

  1. Spend abundant watering of plants and soak water with an earthen lump. If you can, install a device for autowatering.
  2. Move the plants to the coolest place in the house.
  3. Install screens that scatter direct rays or transfer plants to a place with diffused lighting and protect them from the sun.

Such simple measures will help minimize moisture loss and reduce the need for active care of plants, and accordingly will simplify the measures that will have to be taken upon return.

Resuscitation of plants after a long trip

But first aid to plants after returning from a vacation or trip may still be needed. Each grower more than once at the first glance at the plants happened to understand with chagrin that even your friends or neighbors who undertook to water the plants did not cope with their task and they are in a deplorable state.

And even if you did not have a couple of days, the plants can still suffer. But in trying to resume leaving and quickly compensate for their green favorites, the lack of attention is important not to overdo it and not aggravate the situation. In no case do not grab the watering can and do not immediately start watering the plants. After all, if they were looked after, it is possible that the cause of the oppressed state is not at all the dryness of the substrate. Therefore, in order to help your indoor and potted plants, first of all, you need to carefully consider them and determine what condition they are in:

  1. If you agreed with someone about leaving, then most likely the plants are in a waterlogged substrate, and did not suffer from dryness. Waterlogging of the substrate during temporary guardians threatens plants much more often, they are more likely to overfulfill their duties than to too poor watering.
  2. There are also cases when plants literally dry up. This problem is most obvious during short and unexpected business trips or trips and in cases where no one has agreed to help.

Moreover, outwardly, both options are difficult to distinguish. Two problems that you may encounter appear equally: dry tops, sluggish and pale leaves, drying out shoots are typical for both cases.

What to do if the plants are flooded?

If your plants have suffered from too much watering and too active care, then it is urgent to dry the earthen lump. First of all, remove the pots from the pallets and place them on a high stand so that the air enters the watering holes. Allow the substrate in pots to dry almost completely, and for drought-resistant crops, completely dry it completely. Only after that start regular regular watering, always focusing on the degree of moisture of the substrate and carefully inspecting the plants before each procedure.

Plants will not recover so quickly, but will gradually return to normal. If drying does not help or is unacceptable for a specific type of plant, then you will have to resort to a dangerous, but the only way out is an emergency transplant.

What to do if the plants are not watered?

In case your plants have suffered from too long a drought, it is urgently necessary to saturate an earthen lump with water and carry out emergency irrigation. But for such a procedure, the classical method of overhead irrigation is not suitable.

Tanks with plants must be lowered into large bowls or a bucket of water suitable for watering indoor plants, and left completely immersed until the soil is completely saturated with moisture and air bubbles no longer come out.

If it is impossible to immerse the plants in water due to their large size, it is necessary to place the plants in a large container or on a pallet, into which a large amount of water can freely flow and water a little substrate every hour. And then carry out plentiful watering.

Sanitary pruning

But only the correction of humidity first aid to your pets is not limited. You must not forget about sanitary pruning. It can be carried out no earlier than 10 days after your return and the resumption of normal watering.

Within two weeks after resuming plant care, you will already be able to judge whether the plants are capable of releasing new leaves and shoots, or will have to resort to more drastic measures. If the plant is well restored, then pruning all the dried, rotted, damaged parts of the plant, removing yellowed leaves and elongated shoots will help it recover completely.
